The Carpentras strawberry

The Carpentras strawberry has been a registered trademark since 1987. Three varieties are grown around Carpentras in the Comtat Venaissin plain: Pajaro, Ciflorette and Gariguette.

It arrives with the first fine days on the shelves, full of color and flavor. Comtadins are eagerly awaiting it, not hesitating to pay top dollar to enjoy the first fruits of the season.

Comtat Venaissin is the most important production area in the Provence region. Strawberry cultivation began at the end of the 19th century, after the numerous crises that marked the agricultural landscape between 1852 and 1875 and, above all, with the creation of the Carpentras canal, which transformed the Comtat Venaissin into a vast early fruit garden.

It comes in all shapes and sizes, thanks to the talent of the confectioners who prepare it in jams, strawberry preserves, or flavour syrups and berlingots to awaken the most gourmet palates.

Strawberry Festival

Every year, in mid-April, Carpentras hosts the “Fête de la fraise” (strawberry festival), during which the Confrérie de la Fraise de Carpentras (Carpentras strawberry brotherhood) marches in procession. You can smell the strawberry and taste this delicious fruit during the festival, and your taste buds will be overwhelmed by the sweetness of this red marvel.

The Carpentras strawberry has become a brand name

An adventure that began on October 14, 2016, with the Confrérie de la Fraise de Carpentras registering the “Fraise de Carpentras Comtat Venaissin” trademark with the Institut national de la propriété industrielle.

A number of public bodies are also involved in this initiative: firstly, the Chamber of Agriculture, then the Vaucluse Department. And, of course, the town of Carpentras, which has hosted the “Fête de la Fraise” for several years now, with which Interfel was associated last year. Dominique Begnis, President of the Confrérie de la Fraise, and Francis Adolphe, Mayor of Carpentras, jointly signed a charter for this brand, ensuring its official promulgation.

Protecting Vaucluse production

The aim: to protect Comtat Venaissin strawberry producers from the misuse of the words “Fraises de Carpentras”, which can sometimes be seen on strawberry crates from…Toulouse, for example, as Christian Mounier, chairman of the department’s agriculture commission, pointed out.

A set of specifications was therefore drawn up. It limits the number of varieties, and delimits the production area to the whole of Vaucluse. A number of markers are referenced: a logo, trays and banners marked with this logo. A website for the general public has also been created.
