Séguret

A medieval village out of time

At the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif, overlooking the Rhône valley in a landscape of vineyards, Séguret sits enthroned on its hillside like a Provencal crib village, overlooked by an ancient medieval castle. The village has stood the test of time, and retains traces of its past, giving it a special charm. Facing west, it offers a breathtaking view of sunsets and the Dentelles de Montmirail.

Take a tour of the village and discover all its remains, such as the Porte Reynier, a vestige of the fortifications, the Mascarons fountain, the washhouse and the belfry, as well as the Romanesque church of Saint-Denis… Other village attractions include the rue des Poternes, the Mascarons fountain, the Belfry, the Sainte Thècle chapel, the rue du four, the Saint Denis church, the washhouse and the Place des Arceaux.

A steep walk leads to the top of the hill, where the remains of the tower and ramparts that once joined the village remain, offering remarkable views over the landscape.

Séguret classified village in Vaucluse - Provence

The village of Séguret, listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, offers its calade (sloping, stone-paved) streets for a stroll in the shade of its old walls, in an atmosphere where time seems to have stood still.

Built in the 10th century with its houses squeezed behind ramparts, a guarantee of security in turbulent times, it takes its name from the Provencal word “segur” (“securitas” in Latin).

Remains of the village not to be missed during your visit

Portail de la Bise

This gate gave access to the village from the north, when it was surrounded by a rampart. It owes its name to its exposure to the north wind, the Mistral.

The thickness of the wall, pierced by a loophole, suggests the highly defensive nature of this gateway, which has not been restored since the 14th century.

The village walls and gates were permanently guarded, while lookouts kept watch over the surrounding area from the “castle” atop the hill overlooking the village.

The defensive rampart can still be seen at the front of the village, known in Provençal as “le Barri”. In the past, the village governor lived just above the Porte de la Bise.

Saint Thecla's chapel

Not far from the belfry, this former chapel was closed to worship in the 19th century. It was beginning to fall into disrepair when it was restored by the Friends of Séguret in the 1960s. Today, painting exhibitions are held from April to October, and Santons and Christmas Traditions in December.

Belfry

Right next to the Mascarons fountain is the belfry, also dating from the 17th century, with its unique needle. It boasts one of the oldest belfry bells in Vaucluse, installed there in 1660 and still ringing the hours.

Place des Arceaux

The square is shaded by a foliage of plane tree branches, naturally intertwined. These trees have been classified as “Arbres remarquables de France”. Its first wall dates back to 1714, and a fountain was installed in the 1800s.

Chapelle Notre Dame des Grâces

Chapelle Notre Dame des Grâces was built in 1636.

Rue des Poternes

This winding calade-paved street crosses the village from the portail de la Bise in the north to the portail Neuf in the south.

Popular with painters and strollers alike, it is dotted with small boutiques and exhibition spaces, a tearoom and two restaurants. Some of the old houses still stand, with their old doors, including a house dating from 1555, the Mascarons fountain and the belfry. There are also several 17th- and 18th-century poternes.

Located in the lower part of the rue des Poternes, the Place de la Libération is now home to a number of terraces where you can enjoy a drink or a meal.

Saint Denis Church

Its first construction dates back to the 10th century, originally very small and facing east. Originally very small and facing east, it was enlarged in the 13th century and changed its orientation. The side nave was added in several stages in the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally Romanesque, it now features Baroque furnishings.

Rue du four

In 1988, a bread oven was installed in this street leading up to the church, practically where the former communal oven would have stood. As you climb the hill, you’ll discover a beautiful panorama of the valley over the village’s rooftops.

Portail Neuf

This gate, which still retains its wooden leaves, gave access to the village from the south. It has not been restored since the 14th century.

Fountain of the Masks

This beautiful fountain dates from the 17th century and is listed as a “Monument Historique”. It was once the only water source in the village.
