Located in the heart of the world’s largest ochre deposit, Roussillon owes its fame to its magnificent cliffs and impressive ochre quarries. Discover Roussillon’s unique natural heritage on the ochre trail, and learn how these pigments are processed for building and decoration at the “Conservatoire des Ocres et des Pigments Appliqués”, housed in a former ochre factory.
As soon as you step into the village of Roussillon, you’ll be captivated by its charm and atmosphere. Stroll through the picturesque maze of lanes and squares. The facades of the houses are a magnificent illustration of the results achieved by the ochres.
Shades vary subtly from light yellow to flamboyant red, while doors and windows are dressed in contrasting colors. Roussillon can be visited calmly, as if to savor it… from the lower town to the top of the Castrum and its impressive panorama, every nook and cranny will fill you with wonder.
