Orange
City of Orange, Vaucluse (84)
Orange, nicknamed the “City of Princes”, is a French commune located in the northwest of the Vaucluse département in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region.
Located in the south of France, in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône, Orange is the ideal place to stay in Provence. Orange alone boasts two important testimonies to the Roman era: the Arc de Triomphe and the Theater, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The town of Orange is located on the alluvial plain of the Rhône, crossed by two tributaries of the Rhône, the Meyne in the town center and the Aigues to the north, and has always developed around the Saint-Eutrope hill. Thanks to its location on the Rhone corridor and the Agrippa route, Orange has been an important transit point since ancient times.
The Théâtre Antique d’Orange is the best-preserved ancient theater in Europe, and a must-see. In summer, concerts and shows take place here, an ancient site that’s always alive…
Orange Museum of Art and History
The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire d’Orange is housed in the mansion built in the 17th century for Georges Van Cuyl. This Dutchman was in charge of munitions for the castle of the Princes of Orange, which stood atop the Saint-Eutrope hill above the theater.
From its origins, the hotel has retained its staircase, windows, French ceilings and gypsum fireplace. Today, it houses a rich collection of furniture and objets d’art, and traces the history of Orange from Antiquity to the 19th century.
Orange history
Orange, gateway to Provence, a town incredibly rich in history, from Celtic fortifications to Roman buildings that are still talked about today.
Liberated from the Saracens by Guillaume d’Orange, from Comtat, it became a Principality from 1150 with the Princes des Baux, then belonged to the Princes de Nassau from 1530 to 1702. It became Dutch under William 1st of Nassau – Stathouder, Dutch Governor. The principality was taken by Louis XIV in 1703 and annexed to France in 1713… Its history doesn’t end there, and for a more complete and exhaustive account, the Musée d’art et d’histoire d’Orange welcomes you all year round.
You’ll be amazed by the quality of the Roman monuments to be discovered, starting with the most remarkable: the ancient theater and the Arc de Triomphe, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You’ll also find the remains of the temples on the hill of St. Eutrope – the city’s patron saint 460 AD – the surrounding wall, the aqueduct and the west wall of the forum.
The tourist office offers several routes through the town, guiding you along the streets to discover its heritage from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the 19th-century theater, the large Protestant temple, the castle, the town houses, the sculpture by Injalbert, the 15th-century church of St Florent, the statue of Raimbaud Comte d’Orange, the town hall, the Notre Dame de Nazareth cathedral, the Gabet chapel…
Festivals and Orange
The town’s geographical position invites you to alternate the pleasures of Vaucluse’s festivities. Enjoy the lyrical art programmed by the Chorégies – one of France’s oldest festivals, since its premiere took place in 1869 – in the Théâtre Antique d’Orange, an exceptional venue thanks to the preservation of its stage wall, which distills a sound of great purity and quality to its hemicycle.
The town of Orange is also famous for its Côtes-du-Rhône wine, so you can enjoy the diversity of the surrounding countryside, from Chateauneuf-du-Pape to Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau…
