Malaucène
Provencal village in Vaucluse
Huddled within its ramparts, Malaucène, capital of the Ventoux, takes shape around its ancient fort on the village’s highest point. Part of the old town is surrounded by a remarkable courtyard planted with huge plane trees several hundred years old. All that remains of Malaucène’s fortified walls are a few gates, including the Soubeyran gate, which was once used as a gallows for the public hanging of criminals.
Little by little, Malaucène has grown into a large town, continuing the same industrial activity of the past four centuries with Papeteries de Malaucène, specialized in the manufacture of cuffs for cigarette filters. Agriculture has developed in parallel, and for some years now tourism has been one of Malaucène’s resources. As you stroll through the streets of Malaucène, you’ll be able to admire beautiful homes dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, old fountains and washhouses. The Cours Isnards is home to a succession of restaurants, café terraces, hotels and numerous shops.
This is where the market takes place every Wednesday. An opportunity to buy the famous Ventoux cherries, “blanches”, “burlats” or “coeur de pigeon” that have made its reputation, as well as asparagus, apricots and other local produce.
Malaucène is the starting point for many walks and horse rides to Mont Ventoux. (Don’t miss the superb walk to the Calvaire panoramic site). Numerous leisure activities are available on site to entertain young and old alike.
Saint Michel de Malaucène church
In the early 14th century, Malaucène was the summer residence of Pope Clement V. He left his mark on the town with the church of Saint Michael and Saint Peter, which he had built in 1309 on the site of an ancient temple.
Saint Michel became the patron saint of Malaucène. The organs at Saint Michel church give a variety of concerts and events throughout the year.
Malaucène celebrates Saint Michael’s Day with a votive festival at the end of September. The program includes a ball, merry-go-rounds and entertainment.
Many tourists visit the church of Saint Michel every year, making it a not-to-be-missed monument during your stay in Malaucène.
