Les cinglés: The "cycling" club for bike enthusiasts!
The story:
Until 1988, thousands and thousands of cyclists had climbed the famous Mont-Ventoux on their racing bikes via one of the 3 main routes (Bédoin, Malaucène, Sault), and they were all very proud to have added to their already brilliant cycling record this performance, described by many Tour de France winners as the hardest of all the major French and even European cols. In 21.5 km, the difference in altitude is 1620 m: mountain concentration!
The challenge launched in 1988 at Easter in Provence in Miramas (organized by the Fédération Française de Cyclotourisme) was to climb the Ventoux 3 times in the same day, using the 3 main routes. The cyclist who succeeded in this feat would be qualified as a “Cinglé du Mont-Ventoux”, and would become a member of the newborn Club (or Confrérie) des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux.
The organizer would thus demonstrate that any cyclist, normally trained, without excessive fatigue, could succeed in this challenge.
In 1998, a tough option allowed Les Cinglés to become Galériens by adding a fourth climb via the now-famous Route forestière (via Bédoin).
2007 also saw the launch of the Bicinglette option, doubling the Cinglé option.
Every year, several hundred candidates try their luck on the slopes of the “Giant of Provence”.
