Clos Saint Jean
The Terroir of Chateauneuf du Pape
Clos Saint Jean is a renowned estate in Chateauneuf du Pape, producing wonders for your taste buds.
Chateauneuf du Pape is a name to dream about. It represents an appellation, a wine and a village.
The terroir
– 60% of the vineyard is located on a clay-limestone plateau covered with alpine diluvium.
The Atouts plateau and its high terraces are made up of quaternary alluvium and rolled quartzite pebbles deposited by the Rhône after the ice ages.
deposited by the Rhône after the ice ages, and the large pebbles that cover the soil act as thermal regulators, returning to the grapes during the night the heat stored during the day.
– 40% on plateau slopes
The quality of Châteauneuf du Pape’s terroirs derives more from its Burdigalian molasse subsoil than from the substrate that covers them.

The origins of the vineyard
The family business was founded around 1900 by Edmond TACUSSEL.
Le Clos Saint Michel was registered in 1910 by the same Edmond TACUSSEL, so it’s over a century old!
We will see the vineyard grow over the generations with
the entrance:
In 1920 by his son Léopold Tacussel
In 1930 from his son-in-law Camille Maurel
In 1957 by his grandson Guy Maurel
And the death in 1982 of his great-grandsons Pascal and Vincent Maurel.
Current surface area: 40 hectares appellation d’origine
contrôlée Chateauneuf du Pape rouge, including some 20 hectares on the Crau plateau (lieu dits coteau de saint Jean and cabane de saint jean).
1 hectare appellation d’origine contrôlée Chateauneuf du Pape blanc.
Growing methods and climate
Swept by the mistral, this is one of the driest areas in the Rhône Valley, with 2800 hours of sunshine a year. The heat stored during the day by the famous “caïau frejaü” is released at night through a furnace effect. This terroir is subject to a four-beat rhythm: two dry seasons (a short one in winter,
a very long and accentuated one in summer), two rainy seasons in autumn and spring (heavy and brutal rains).
Its unique Mediterranean climate is an exceptional asset!
