The Chorégies d’Orange is France’s oldest festival, dating back to 1869, and has retained all its original features over the years. Every summer, the festival takes place in the perfectly preserved ancient theater of Orange, which seats 8,300 people.
The Théâtre Antique d’Orange is a landmark of our heritage, and has the privilege of having preserved its “Wall”, guaranteeing exceptional acoustics. The first performance took place in 1869 with an opera by Mehul, “Joseph”. The Théâtre Antique’s vocation at the time was to promote French playwrights of the day and return to the roots of the great Greco-Roman tragedies. The Théâtre Antique’s lyrical and musical vocation took on an important role in 1971, with the creation of the “Nouvelles Chorégies”, which immediately met with immense success. All the great names in the world of lyrical art have performed here, giving this ideal stage venue an international prestige that has been confirmed year after year.
