Carpentras

City of Carpentras in Vaucluse (84)

Carpentras is located in the heart of the Vaucluse region, at the foot of Mont Ventoux. From 1229 to 1791, Carpentras was a papal stronghold, and visitors can admire its bright ochre facades, cool alleyways and fountains… It’s an ideal vacation spot for those who want to savor the Comtadin art of living!

At the heart of the agricultural plain, Carpentras boasts a high-quality terroir, evidenced by a weekly market that dates back to the town’s origins. The entire region is devoted to gastronomy and early produce.

Market gardeners grow strawberries, melons… The vineyards produce AOC Côtes du Ventoux wines, and truffles are honored at the famous Carpentras truffle market, held every Friday from late November to early March. Carpentras truffles can be tasted, and their reputation is well established. Try a truffle omelette, your taste buds will be delighted! And last but not least, don’t leave Carpentras without trying one of our sweet specialties: berlingot and candied fruit, prepared in the pure artisanal tradition.

The biggest cultural events take place in summer: the Estivales de Carpentras in the 2nd half of July, and the Jewish Music Festival in early August.

Carpentras, town of art and history

The town once belonged to the Holy See, from the 13th to the 18th century, and owes much of its originality to it. Its architecture is inspired by Italian models, and the presence of the Jews, protected by the Popes, marks its culture.

Strolling through the streets of Carpentras, you'll discover a rich heritage:

– The discovery tour takes you through this heritage, named berlingot (in reference to the town’s speciality), where you’ll come across 21 enameled lava lutrins.

– France’s oldest synagogue (1367), still in use today, is an emotional place that bears witness to Judeo-Provencal civilization, past and present.

– The Hôtel-Dieu and its preserved 18th-century pharmacopoeia. A major renovation project will soon enable it to house the Inguimbertine library collection. Its collection of 76,000 volumes of early printed works and over 3,000 manuscripts has earned it international renown.

– The former Palais Episcopal, now a courthouse.

– The Roman Arch, the Porte d’Orange, the last vestige of the 14th-century ramparts.

– The Cathedral of Saint Siffrein, in Southern Gothic style.

– Passage Boyer, with its huge glass roof and boutiques.

Carpentras, a land of flavours

The Carpentras market is classified as an exceptional market for its atmosphere and the quality of its products. The Provencal market invades the town on Friday mornings with its 350 fairground stallholders. From late November to early March, discover the hushed world of the truffle market, which sets the standard for the entire region. The Carpentras truffle is a renowned delicacy.

La confiserie du Mont Ventoux offers you berlingots made by hand. Take a tour, taste them and learn how they’re made. A sweet with many flavors, so treat yourself.

Carpentras offers a wide range of sporting activities

A grass racecourse, an airfield for aerial sports, a sports complex (skate park, tennis courts, bi-cross, go-karting, etc.), two fitness trails (including the riverside Berges de l’Auzon park, ideal for picnics), an indoor swimming pool and a water sports stadium (Olympic-size pool, diving pit, slide, training pool, snack bar).

Carpentras, ideally located in the heart of the Vaucluse region, is within easy reach of some of the world’s most famous tourist attractions:
– Mont Ventoux, a ski resort in winter, and a year-round destination for hikers and cyclists.
– the Dentelles de Montmirail, a rock-climbing and hiking area, with its superb vineyard landscapes.
