The Popes' Palace and its Art
The seat of Christianity, nine popes succeeded one another in Avignon in the 15th century. The Palace of the Popes, an imposing fortress and sumptuous palace, is the symbol of the power of Christianity and the temporal and spiritual power exercised by the papacy at the time.
In less than twenty years (1335-1352), two papal builders, Benedict XII and Clement VI, erected the world’s largest Gothic palace.
It’s the largest Gothic palace in France, and a visit here will reveal the grand ceremonial halls, the chapels with their painted decorations, the pope’s private apartments and the terraces offering a marvellous panoramic view of Avignon and the Rhône.
Priceless frescoes can be admired in the chapels and private apartments of the popes. They bear witness to the innovative work of the French and Italian schools of painting. Some of the painted decorations are attributed to the famous Italian painter Matteo Giovannetti.
