Aix en Provence
Provencal town of art and history
Aix-en-Provence was the capital of Provence in the 15th century: prosperous merchants and notables turned the city into the Provençal Florence we know today. Its name comes from the thermal springs discovered when the town was founded by the Romans in 123 BC.
Aix is surrounded by richly preserved countryside, with authentic Provencal country houses surrounded by formal gardens, protected by the Montagne Sainte Victoire.
Bourgeois residences, flower-filled squares, private mansions, ancient fountains, shady lanes… all the images of noble Provence in the 17th and 18th centuries can be found in Aix-en-Provence. It’s a great town to live in, with its narrow streets criss-crossing the city, ideal for a stroll. The Cours Mirabeau, the center of the town with its majestic fountain, sets the tone.
The great names of literature and painting have been inspired by the city’s charm: Guigou, Stendhal, Mistral, Zola and Cézanne. An itinerary marked with the letter C crosses Aix-en-Provence and allows you to visit the places where the painter lived.
Aix en Provence boasts a rich architectural heritage, superbly restored and maintained.
The townhouses lining the Cours Mirabeau and Rue Gaston de Saporta, with their beautiful sculpted doors and windows, balconies and wrought ironwork, make Aix a veritable open-air museum.
The elegant women of Aix and the surrounding region can be found in the chic boutiques of the pedestrian streets around the town hall and the Mazarin district.
Every summer, the Festival International d’Art Lyrique et de Musique presents a sumptuous line-up of divas and maestros, while the dance festival also enjoys an international reputation.
